About Monument 2

What's Monument 2?

It's a privacy-focused photo storage and organization device. While providing a central photo storage, Monument intelligently groups photos by people, scenery as well as date, location and cameras using on-device A.I.

What makes Monument different?

It's a powerful photo storage and organization solution while providing cloud-level experience and protecting privacy. Unlike public cloud services, Monument does not process, collect, use or share any personal data. Users keep ownership and have full control over their content.

With its highly reliable internal SSD storage, Monument keeps photos and videos safe.

How does it differ from Google Photos?

Compared to Google Photos, Monument provides a similar photo management experience while protecting user privacy and security. We do not use, market, or sell any personal data. None of your content is visible except you.

Additionally, Monument stores user content in high, original resolution at no additional cost. We do not downgrade the content quality.

Finally, Monument allows you to create additional on-site and off-site backups for increased redundancy.

For more information, check out our detailed comparison page.

How does it differ from iCloud?

iCloud helps syncing content only across Apple devices. If a photo is deleted from an iPhone, it gets removed from all other devices and iCloud.

Moreover, iCloud cannot sync content from Android phones. Monument, being platform-independent, acts as the center of all user content and helps free up space on users’ devices.

Finally, Monument allows you to create additional on-site and off-site backups for increased redundancy. Also, by adding USB Drives, Monument helps you create virtually unlimited storage space unlike iCloud's limited 2TB storage capacity.

For more information, check out our detailed comparison page.

When will it be available?

You can pre-order Monument on Kickstarter by late September 2020. Shipping will start in April 2021.

What's the difference between Monument 1 and Monument 2?

Monument 2 is the result of the immense feedback we received from our community. Monument 2 is 10x faster and includes much more accurate AI capabilities.

Additionally, Monument 2 includes dual band WiFi, built-in SSD, and USB 3.0 which provides higher performance.

For more information, check out the side-by-side comparison.

Instead of built-in SSD, can I use my existing USB Drives?

Yes, you can order Monument without the internal SSD and use your own USB drives as your storage.

Can I trade in my existing Monument for a Monument 2?

Yes, you can trade-in your existing Monument for a credit, so you can purchase your new Monument with a discount. When placing your order, just select the option for trade-in.

Once you receive the new Monument 2, just plug in the USB Drive you use with your old Monument and that's it. Monument 2 will import all of your content and existing settings.

How can I transfer my content from Monument 1 to Monument 2?

Just plug in the external drive you're currently using with Monument 1 and Monument 2 will transfer your content from the external drive automatically.

I do not have anything to hide, why is privacy important?

Today, we live in a fully digital world and its currency is data. Companies analyze our photos, location, contact lists, likes, dislikes, who we spend time with, shopping preferences, basically every bit of information about us. We are vulnerable to manipulation and when it's misused, it's powerful enough to influence our believes and choices; shortly everything that makes us unique. We did not have a choice.

Simply when you make a web search, results are ranked according to advertisers' biddings and the chances that you are most likely to click, not based on the quality or relevancy.

The impact of non-transparent policies and failures in privacy practices have been colossal.

It's not any different than being constantly monitored by someone to profile us who we are with, what we own, or where we've been.

About Monument

Who's behind Monument?

Monument began life in 2016 by a group of engineers and designers after looking for an easy solution to back up and organize photos scattered across multiple hard drives and computers without giving up on privacy and security. After launching the product for pre-orders on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, we shipped our first generation product in 2017.

Currently, Monument is sold through major online retailers in the U.S.: Amazon, BestBuy, Walmart, B&H Photo, Adorama, Target, and The Grommet.

We are named as one of the Top 100 startups by Wired Magazine(UK). We are headquartered in Chicago.

Why did you create Monument?

The growing use of smartphones and rapid advancements in imaging technology have caused significant increase in photo and video creation which drives the need for more storage capacity than ever.

Historically, using external drives to store, organize and access photos was a manual, time consuming and often difficult process. Even today, storage manufacturers are failing to provide an easy, reliable and versatile solution to organize photos.

Cloud-based solutions address this problem, but they usually come with inefficiencies and quality limitations associated with platform dependency, cost, and particularly privacy and security.

We have to give away our personal data which later could leave usvulnerable to misuse of data, hacking or manipulation. Most users had to settle without any alternative options.

Monument creates a new layer in photo management with a focus on privacy.

Where are you located?

We're headquartered in Chicago and remote team members from Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey.
